What is Camp Athena?

Camp Athena is open to all girls in 5th-12th grade and focuses on on developing leadership skills through Outdoor Education. With adult staff guidance, youth staff members (OWLS) have worked throughout the year to develop plans for the camp. These include hiking, backpacking, tomahawk throwing, archery, swimming and outdoor skills. We believe that the 11 facets of leadership are best taught in a setting where outdoor living and outdoor fun are the focus; and the skills are easily applied during the daily camp activities. Camp Athena is an unique experience because unlike most day camps and Girl Scout camps, Camp Athena is run by girls for girls. A typical day at Athena may include swimming, sing-alongs, phase pride, legends, archery, tomahawk, ceremonies, hiking, camp spirit and much, much more.

What are OWLS?

OWLS (Outdoor Warrior Leadership Sisterhood) is a year long program where the youth leaders learn to teach 11 leadership competencies (Apple Pies) while preparing and executing plans for camp, aolong with developing other skills in marketing, budgeting, event planning, counseling, etc. To be eligible to be a youth leader, all applicants must have completed 8th grade, be 14 years old by the time of camp, and a Phase 3 graduate, in addition to being interviewed and accepted into the program. OWLS meet one weekend a month throughout the year.

What are Phases?

Campers are divided into phase by age, camping experience, and maturity. Staffers will make final decision regrading phase placement after reviewing each registration and camper at May Orientation Day. All 3 phases focus on learning leadership and outdoor skills. Completion of previous phases are not required for entrance into any phase.
Phase 1 (Group/Patrol Leader Introduction)
Phase 1 is for girls entering 5th- 6th grade; no camping experience is necessary. Girls will experience the dynamics and power of a close-knit patrol. They are exposed to the responsibilities of group and patrol membership as well as leadership skills. There will be one overnight backpacking trip between 2-4 miles.

Phase 2 (Group/Patrol Leader Development)
Phase 2 is for girls entering 7th- 8th grade; camping experience and outdoor skills are desirable but not required.  Their training will assist them in becoming a leader of small groups. Participants are exposed to advanced levels of leadership competencies and are given guided opportunities to lead a group/patrol. There will be one overnight backpacking trip between 4-8 miles.

Phase 3 (Advanced Group/Patrol Leader Development)
Phase 3 is for girls entering 9th- 12th grade; skills and knowledge in first aid, cooking and camping experience are preferred but not required. Participants practice leadership at the highest level in a high adventure setting. Girls will backpack for a total of 20 miles during a two day backpacking trip.
